Empower Me First offers a variety of opportunities for first-generation students to find community and feel a sense of belonging as well as to grow and develop through educational and social programs.

Empower Me First Academy

The Empower Me First Academy is a cohort-based program lasting the academic year that fosters academic and personal development, holistic wellness, and sense of belonging for first-generation college students in their first-year of college at the University of Miami.

Empower Me First Mentorship Program

The Empower Me First Mentorship Program connects undergraduate first-generation students with a faculty or staff mentor to assist in building their network by encouraging students' professional and personal growth, engaging with faculty or staff to aid in setting goals and exploring interests, and empowering students to take ownership of their education and learn to advocate for themselves along their journey to self-discovery.

Intended for: Sophomores, Juniors, and/or Seniors

First-Gen Fridays

These casual events are hosted the first Friday of every month around campus. The topics of these events vary by month ranging from building community, and connecting with opportunities, to learning how to get involved. First-Generation College Celebration

As part of a national tradition of celebrating first-generation college student achievements and contributions every year on or around November 8th, the Empower Me First team and First Gen 'Canes collaborate on a series of events leading up to the signature event on November 8th.

Office of Academic Enhancement End of Year Celebration

Every April, the Office of Academic Enhancement hosts an End of Year Celebration to spotlight student achievements, experiential learning that students have engaged with such as internships, research, and study abroad, and recognizing our graduating students that engage with our office.  Whether you are joining us as a graduating student or as a student supporting peers by showing up to celebrate their successes, we welcome students to join us and participate. 

Intended for:  Open to all students; first-generation students graduating in May, Summer, and/or December who have engaged with our office will be recognized

Professional Clothing Closet
In partnership with Bake Back America, Empower Me First organizes a professional clothing closet event to assist students with financial need to obtain professional attire ahead of the Toppel Career Center's Career Expo in the spring semester.

Student Organization: First Gen 'Canes

First Gen 'Canes is a student organization that is registered with the Committee on Student Organizations. The purpose of First Gen 'Canes is to unite, empower, represent, and cultivate leaders among first-generation college students at the University of Miami. It is FGC's mission to promote and coordinate active participation in academic, cultural, professional, and social activities for first-generation college students.
