The University of Miami announces its second round of the Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch Fellowship, designed to nurture emerging leaders specializing in the study of Asia, with a focus on US-China relations. The fellowship offers $2,000 each to two fellows, to be used in support of field research, dissertation completion, books and journal subscriptions, or travel and participation in conference(s) related to East Asian and China Studies.
Ambassador Bloch, founder and executive chair of the US-China Education Trust, is the first Asian American to hold ambassadorial rank in US history. She has had a distinguished career in US government service and in international affairs, spanning six decades. Her life story and dedication to nurturing the next generation of leaders with expertise and understanding of East Asia, China in particular, led her to create the fellowship in 2023.
Having moved to the US at the age of nine, Ambassador Bloch personally experienced the power of education to build genuine cross-cultural understanding. “At a time of rising competition and tension between the US and China, there is a need for more opportunities like this fellowship to encourage more students to consider a career related to China and Asia.”
Last year’s University of Miami awardees were Skylar Bentlin, whose project focused on China’s geopolitical strategy in Africa, and Nolan Dietz Velarde, who studied how environmental NGOs helped shape U.S.-China bilateral environmental policies and collaboration.
